Our Story

A school built by its parents — literally

Since 1919, Murrumbeena families have built this school with their own hands and their own money. Here is how we got here — and why the next step is beyond any community.

The hall our parents built

In 1990, the parents of Murrumbeena Primary School did something remarkable: they funded and built the school hall themselves — 100% parent donations, no government money. It followed the swimming pool in 1929 and came before the amphitheatre in 1992. That is who this community is.

Murrumbeena is also renowned for its art program — the school runs one of the most famous art exhibitions and school performances among nearby schools, drawing families from across the district. Our children don't just play sport; they create, rehearse and perform.

To this day, parents fund the school's repairs to keep conditions good for the kids — patching, painting and maintaining facilities the system hasn't. But a new school hall is not something sausage sizzles can buy. That is why we are asking the State to fund Stages 2 & 3 of the VSBA-approved masterplan in the 2027–28 Budget.

The hall was their proudest gift. A full-sized gym is now our most urgent need.
